How To Build A Memorable Tagline For Writers

As a writer, creating a memorable tagline is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most successful ways to draw attention to you.

It’s time to wake up if you believed creating a best-seller was only about writing great material. To come up with a catchy tagline, you must first understand your brand in terms of:

  • What you write
  • How you write
  • Why people should care about your work above the work of the big brands.

If you don’t provide people with a compelling reason to buy your book, they won’t because the market is saturated. This guide will take you on steps to create irresistible taglines. It will also teach you the right and wrong ways to write taglines.

Let’s dive in!

What Is An Author Tagline?

An author tagline is a simple, catchy phrase that provides a short, easy-to-remember description for your book.

Consider an “author tagline,” a slogan or subliminal call to action that promotes your brand. A tagline for writers means establishing your expertise and showing consumers what you have to offer in an easily repeatable manner.

It also highlights factors that may entice readers to buy your goods. As a result, an author tagline differs significantly from a logline or book blurb, both of which summarize a book.

An author tagline defines what YOU provide as a writer. Consider a great author tagline a credo or a professional goal that evolves with your bibliography.

With our unique definition in mind, let’s look at the steps to creating a fantastic tagline.

Tagline For Writers: Steps to Creating Unique Author Taglines

1. Brainstorm ideas

To create an organizational purpose statement, you need to consider your identity. What should you type? What objective should your tagline carry? Discuss your strengths, faults, style, and voice when stuck with your agent, editor, or critique partner.

2. Identify your audience

Identify your target market and the type of experience you wish to share.

  • Who’s your intended audience? How do you want to engage with them? What’s at stake for them?
  • What do you hope readers will gain from your work? What aspects of your work appeals most to your audience? Which impression do you wish to make?

3. Decide what makes you special

Deciding what makes you unique is the essence of a good tagline. What distinguishes your books from your competitors? What’s in store for your audience?

Don’t let genre restrict you as you progress through each level. Focus instead on your artistic objectives. Utilize the tagline to assist the readers in understanding why you enjoy writing the content you do.

Are you an unyielding optimist? Do you enjoy stories with a redemptive theme? Focus on the aspects of yourself and your writing that will endure. Look for commonalities or things that can be woven into an exciting design.

Use every weapon in your writer’s toolkit, including alliteration, allegory, puns, punctuation, rhyme, and repetition, to make your tagline as memorable as possible. A tagline for an author must be concise, ideally fewer than ten words, and have a powerful message.

Tagline for Writers: What works and What Doesn’t

Many writers have a tagline or a slogan for their book. This can reflect on the length and depth of the book and serve as a quick summary. Let’s look at what taglines work and those that don’t.

1. Smart Cooks, Author (Wrong tagline)

Headlining a website with your name and the word “author” beneath it merely informs the reader that you’re a writer. It does not necessarily tell us if you are good or published. But, presuming you’ve gotten beyond the talent and distribution difficulties, what do you write?

2. Smart Cooks, Mystery Writer (Wrong Tagline)

We know what you write, but what makes your material unique? Why should we choose your novels over those of established authors like Sue Grafton or Walter Mosley? They won’t if you don’t provide people with a compelling reason to buy your book.

3. Smart Cooks, Bestselling Author -The Daunting Easter Carnival (Wrong Tagline)

Despite these novels being best-sellers, we still don’t know if they’ll be a good fit for us.

We’re curious if these books are holiday detective tales or simply Easter coffee recipes from an author who enjoys alliteration. This kind of vagueness does the opposite of what you want it to. It serves to push readers away.

With your brief explanation, we now know we must continue looking for a definitive answer.

Correct Tagline: For the crime-loving audience, why not visit Smart Cook’s cozy detective website where “coffee and crime are always brewing”?

Examples 1-3 fall short of the mark of a memorable tagline due to their short shelf lives. In other words, nothing about them makes us remember them long after we have forgotten about the author’s advertising materials.

Even if some taglines are deceptively basic, the real force behind them comes from conveying the idea as quickly, precisely, and specifically as possible. You can build your brand’s reputation by giving them a legitimate cause to prefer your items over your rivals.

To Wrap Up

If you’re looking for a tagline as a writer, be sure to do your research. Is the tagline unique, direct and to the point? Is it memorable? All these things must be addressed to form an unforgettable tagline that people will remember.
