Writing in formal style requires high standards when it comes to the usage of the English Language. Formal is the act of adhering to social rules, conventions, and etiquette.

To convey information, it is important to write in a concise manner. Which is why in writing, becoming a formal writer is an advantage. Letters are the most common forms of writing in formal style, but it can also include news reports, emails, essays, or non-fiction.

Many people associate writing in formal style with the use of longer words and complex sentence structures.

Writing with formal standards can be anything but like that. The latter is neither essential nor desirable.

Tips to Help Master Formal Writing

Avoid using Contractions

Contradictions are not necessary: Cannot instead of “can’t” is used.

Professional or academic writing should include formal writing. Keep contractions out and remain impartial.

For example, the informal writing doesn’t include contractions or clichés.

Be Mindful of Pronouns

Third-person pronouns are not used; in contrast, “I” or “me” are not mentioned in this paragraph.

If you write complex sentences with hyper fluent vocabulary, your audience will sense that you are well-informed. Furthermore, this writing style depicts unbiased information that expresses feelings and first-person pronouns.

Standard English, complex sentence structures, short lengths of personal pronouns, and lack of colloquial or slang words define a formal language.

Be Grammatically Correct

Students are expected to use correct grammar and punctuation in their essays. Which is why you should keep in mind to be grammatically correct at all times.
