How do you spell Grammar?

The fact that so many well-educated people write Grammar with an e is disturbing. The correct pronunciation of grammar is /ˈɡramə/. We spell grammar as G-r-a-m-m-a-r. It ends with an ‘ar.’

The origin of the word grammar is the Old French grammaire. If this ar suffix had the same meaning as the present -er, we would expect this ending to have been regularized in contemporary English.

The modern word grammar does not contain a suffix with its meaning or grammatical function. Rather, the word functions as a single unit.

Is it Grammar or Grammer?

This article contrasts the terms grammar and Grammer. I will use each in a statement and provide a helpful technique for determining whether you mean Grammer or grammar.

Grammer should only be used as a proper noun. If you are writing about a Mr. Grammer or the little Indiana town of Grammer, uppercase the word and add an E. Remember Kelsey Grammer? The actor on the E-spelled television series Cheers…exactly!

Do not capitalize the word and spell it with an A when referring to the rules guiding the formation of sentences.
