2. the Few, the Proud

The expression “The Few. The Proud.” has been used in the Marine Corps since 1977. On the battlefield, Marines are a small team charged with a mission.

Their motto proclaims them as the few, the proud. And this motto reinforces their sense of camaraderie and support. Moreover, it highlights the excellent caliber of those who enlist and serve their country as Marines.

3. Esprit De Corps

Esprit de Corps is French for the spirit of unity and fellowship that binds Marines together as they prepare for battle or war.

The spirit emphasized is “each for the good of all” and is embodied through teamwork, reliance on each other, and unity of effort. It indicates great respect for history, traditions, and honor, as well as love and loyalty to the Marines.

Other Traditional Marine Slogans

Before the official ‘Semper Fidelis,’ there were three traditional mottos. The first was Fortitudine, meaning “With Fortitude,” which predated the War of 1812. The second, By Sea and by Land, was a translation of “Per Mare, Per Terram” by the Royal Marines. And the third moto, To the Shores of Tripoli, was used until 1848, honoring O’Bannon’s capture of Derna in 1805.
