A text intended to persuade readers presents a viewpoint on a subject or theme and provides supporting data.

Essays intended to persuade the reader of a position are referred to as persuasive essays or argumentative essays. Speaking and posting on social media are examples of non-essay forms of persuasion. You can turn anything into a persuasive text, including arguments for why purple is the best color ever and political and musical arguments.

A persuasive text may have several different goals. Perhaps your goal is to sway someone’s opinion on a particular issue. Or maybe you want to use advertising to promote a specific good or service.

Writing an effective persuasive text requires using a combination of emotive language and, occasionally, images backed up by factual information or other people’s opinions.

A student tries to persuade the reader of the merits of their opinion or stance on a particular issue. That’s what a persuasive essay or argumentative essay is. The reader must be convinced of a point of view or to take a particular action. The student can do this by using a variety of persuasive techniques to create a convincing and logical argument.

Simple structures are common in persuasive texts. To consistently support your opinions with outside facts or evidence, you must first clearly state your position on a given subject. A strong conclusion should remove any remaining doubts from the reader’s mind.

Get your readers involved right away. Showing rather than simply telling is the goal. A paper on aviation safety, for instance, could start with a discussion of recent media-covered plane crashes. Also a statistic on the number of fatalities this year. Or, to make a point of your essay more concrete, start by sharing a brief, moving story.

Describe the reasons for the controversy, the competing viewpoints, and the urgency of the problem’s resolution. The argument between company budgets and safety could be the topic of a persuasive essay on airline safety. Use the fact that more airline accidents are occurring to demonstrate the importance of the problem. You could also discuss the impact of the controversy on international politics.

Explain the most robust case for each side. Declare a point about the opposing viewpoint you can agree with while stating your position. As an illustration, “While airfares must be affordable, safety measures can be established without incurring excessive cost.”

Your thesis statement—the single sentence that sums up your argument— should come at the end of the introduction. It typically contains the words “should” or “should not” for a persuasive essay. If there is a question or prompt on the assignment, answer it.

Ask yourself if your thesis is something that a reasonable person could dispute. Specificity is required in the thesis. Once you’ve finished writing the rest of the paper, check to see if your thesis is consistent with the evidence you cited. You can outline your main points in the thesis.

At the end of the day, know that, as the writer, you have control in the order of writing sections. You don’t have to follow the standard of writing intro first.
