What is an Essay Outline?

An essay outline is a clear overview of your entire essay. It gives writers an in-depth outline of their essay’s elements and creates a strong structure that they can follow and use as a guide. Sometimes writers will do them once they have a clear paper structure to help guide the writing process.

Students and employers are good at recognizing your efforts when you use good outline techniques. An essay outline can help you organize your ideas and identify the topics you want to emphasize.

A structured approach also allows writers to link key topics seamlessly to avoid jarring topic shifts. The basic essay outline includes the following:

  • An Introduction Paragraph
  • At least three body paragraphs
  • A Conclusion Paragraph

Each paragraph serves a specific function and has a unique tone and focus.

The Importance of an Essay Outline

Essays can involve a plethora of topics depending on their scope and complexity. It’s easy to get lost in a storm of topics and difficult to direct your thoughts without an outline.

If you aren’t confident in the flow of your writing, it’s likely that your readers may feel the same way. An outline establishes order, and it helps writer frame their thoughts and words in a coherent manner.

Essay outlines also allow writers to observe good exposition. You can think of key topics as key ingredients to a dish. The order in which we cook key ingredients has a significant impact on the dish’s quality. An organized and structured approach creates a sense of progression that primes readers for the next batch of information.

This is why outlines are the first step in the writing process. It’s also a way to ensure that you have the right format before getting the work done.

Harvard Essay Outline

Every essay must have three main components. There are slight variations between different writing styles, but they will always have three main components. They are:

  • An introduction paragraph
  • At least three body paragraphs
  • A conclusion paragraph

Harvard essays share the same spirit as most essays with a few changes.

Introduction Paragraph

Harvard essays usually start with a strong hook, either with a quotation or an interesting fact. The introductory paragraph focuses on presenting the main topic of the essay.

The introductory paragraph also contains the thesis statement, which embodies the essay’s main argument or stance.

Body Paragraphs

An essay can have more than three body paragraphs depending on the number of key topics a writer must include. Each body paragraph must start with a topic sentence, followed by supporting facts, quotations, and credible data.

The body paragraph ends with a summary sentence that explains the gist of the paragraph. You can also introduce subtopics using italicized subheadings.

Conclusion Paragraph

Finally, the conclusion paragraph summarizes the most important details of the essay and reiterates the main argument. A strong closing statement also serves as a way to leave a lasting impression on readers.

Harvard Reference List

The referencing section is an important component of the Harvard Essay Outline. It presents readers with a list of the resources you used for your essay. The reference list should be written on a separate page and must include all the sources used in in-text citations.

In Summary

Structure is a key aspect of any writing. It helps writers organize their thoughts and ensures that an essay covers as many key topics as needed. Structured essays are not only easy to read, but they are also easy to review.

Learn to take the time to plan ahead before writing your essay. A distinct angle and clear idea will make your essay more potent and convincing.
